Up and coming in August

It's the start of the new football season, so we will be talking with some of the country`s top groundsmen to bring you exclusive stories on how they are preparing their pitches in the Premiership and Nationwide leagues.

It is also a hectic time for local authorities and mixed sports clubs changing over from the summer to winter sports. How are they coping? We`ll let you know.

Coming to the end of the summer already, so that means renovation time for the cricket , bowls, tennis and croquet clubs. Planning and preparation works are well underway. We will bring you stories from some of the smaller as well as larger clubs.

The 2002 Welsh Open has been staged at Celtic Manor, Newport. Read our review with Golf and Courses Director Jim McKenzie.

Wimbledon is over for another year. Coming up-Read about Eddie Seaward`s renovations and his plans for next year`s tournament.

Saltex is nearly here. Previews and details of new products being shown.

Another online Interview with an industry expert. We have booked in Jonathan Carr from ALS to talk about the organic approach using 'Natural Solutions'.His interview will be live on the site Tuesday 17th September at 4:30PM-More interviews will be posted shortly

Plus, as usual, all the latest Industry news as it happens, and a round-up from the local clubs.

Turf Disease Centre Questionnaire

A gentle reminder to member Groundsmen and Greenkeepers to do their best to complete the questionnaire on leaf spot diseases on sports fields which was sent out last month. Leaf spot has been prevalent this summer, more so than usual. More returned questionnaires mean a better chance of identifying the causes, and a better chance of coming up with a solution.

If you haven`t sent in your completed questionnaire, please do so as soon as possible. You can access the questionnaire by clicking on the following link www.pitchcare.com/questionnaire/questionnaire.doc

Manage your team

These two day courses, held at Manchester United FC are being run by Geoff Brereton from Elmwood College. A Certificate of Attendance will be provided for the course. It may be possible to extend it to a team-leader qualification by completing a project at work. This would then create a NEBSS Team Leader Award. Any such extension to qualification will be discussed during the two day course.
The course is to be held at Old Trafford on the 9th/10th September. Cost is £250 per delegate and will include course fee and refreshments for the two days. Evening meals and overnight accommodation are not included, but a rate of £45 per night per room has been negotiated for the stay.

Please contact Dave Saltman for an application form on 01902 824392 or e-mail dave@pitchcare.com. Full details of the course are in our industry section on the website

August has been a chaotic month, we have been inbetween web developers so to speak, as we say thank you and good luck to Ziggy(going back to Uni) and welcome to Alastair. This coupled with my temporary time back on the front line, working at Villa Park, has meant a slight hiccup in getting out the news. However there are exciting new developments that we will be announcing shortly, in our quest to raise the (professional) status of our Industry. Good luck for the season to all of you embarking on winter sport, and I hope that the weather holds for all of you getting ready to renovate your surfaces.
