Pitchcare website The December 2002 Newsletter
The independent information site for Sports Turf Maintenance

Dear December 2002

Seasons greetings from all at Pitchcare, despite the fact that we have had some very unseasonable weather. A mild, but damp, November has been followed by a mild beginning to December. Frosts and some cold winds are now being felt, which is just as well because many of our Groundsmen and Greenkeepers are reporting leafspot and fusarium, normally summer and autumn diseases. An icy snap will help get them under control.

At this time of the year, I would like to pass on my best wishes to the unsung Groundsmen and Greenkeepers who will be working diligently over the Festive period making sure fixtures and events go ahead. Your work may go unappreciated in some quarters, but not here. Good luck to all of you; have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Dave Saltman
(Managing Director, Pitchcare)

Record Usage

After reporting record usage in October, readership of our magazine in November has gone even better! Another 900 readers in the month, taking the total to 16,100. Each reader spends an average of 5 minutes on the site reading 10 pages.

The industry's leading online magazine is becoming even more popular - thanks to you, our members.

Chat Forum

Wednesday 11th December is the next date for your diary, when we will be joined by the Managing Director of Tillers Turf, Tim Fell. Amongst other things, we will be talking to Tim about the decision of the Millenium Stadium to replace their existing palletted turf system with a conventional turf pitch. The forum will begin at the earlier time of 3.00pm. Make a note in your diary.

Member Survey

Many thanks to all of you who took the trouble to return the questionnaires. Some interesting results and views on what you want from Pitchcare in the future. Details of the survey results are in the General News section of the site. As a taster here are a few of your comments:
"I like the way it unites people."
"Would like to see more general advice to help the amateur like myself."
"Really informative."

Full results are available here

The winner of the Christmas hamper is George Reid from Hemel Hempstead, who should be tucking into his brandy butter and chardonnay at this very moment.

Christmas Conundrum

A man lives on the 15th floor of a block of flats. Every morning at 7.30am he leaves his flat, gets in the lift and goes down to the ground floor. He goes to the bus stop and heads off to work. Every evening he gets back to the block of flats at 5.30pm, gets in the lift at the ground floor and gets off at the 11th floor.
He then walks up the stairs to his flat on the 15th floor.

Conundrum - Why does the man get off at the 11th floor?
Clues - the lift isn't faulty and he isn't a fitness fanatic.

The answer will appear on the website on Monday 16th December
