Pitchcare February Newsletter 26th February 2010 +44 (0)1902 440252
Welcome to our February Newsletter
Dave Saltman, MD PitchcareAn improvement in the weather should be just around the corner, for some parts of the country anyway. Whilst Scotland is still having to deal with snow and freezing temperatures, the rest of the UK is slowly waking up to the fact that winter's nearly over (hopefully).

And that means there's a lot of work to do or start planning for. Grass cover on most winter sports pitches will be sparse so, as the ground temperatures rise, there will be the opportunity for over seeding. Have a look at some of the newer seed varieties which germinate in lower temperatures.

The cricket groundsmen will be itching to start work on the square to gradually build-up that all important consolidation, but don't be too eager to get out there. Rolling when the soil is still wet will cause more harm than good. Patience is the key word, but I appreciate that given this extended cold spell that's something most Groundsman and Greenkeepers don't have a great deal of left!

Because of the surface problems caused by the weather, there will be a lot of demand from clubs preparing for their end of season renovations. I know contractors are already getting booked up so, if you haven't got anything planned yet, you need to get a move on.

Roll on the Spring!

Cheers,
Dave Saltman
