Might be an age thing, but the summer seems to be slipping away very quickly. I was looking forward to the Euro 2004 Championships and Wimbledon, but they are both virtually over and done with (don't mention Beckham and that penalty!). The good news is we've still got Tim and his expectant supporters on Henman Hill (at the time of writing, anyway). July is another great month for high profile grass sports - The Open at Troon, the World Bowls at Ayr and the cricket Test series against the West Indies. The fact is, we do put on a good show and it is one of the reasons why British groundsmen and greenkeepers are so highly regarded. So, another busy month ahead for all concerned, preparing for matches or completing the renovations in readiness for the winter sport season. Yes, that's just around the corner. There I go, wishing my life away again. Good luck everybody, and especially the lads and lasses looking after the big event facilities. Kind Regards Dave Saltman Managing Director, Pitchcare |

The magnificent Northfield Bowling Complex in Ayr hosts the sports' most prestigious event with 24 teams taking part, including all four home countries and current holders Australia. The winning country will receive the Leonard Trophy, named after William Leonard, the then managing director of the first sponsors of the event, Ampol, in 1966. The complex is owned by South Ayrshire Council, and Head Groundsman, Hugh Mclaughlin, has been planning and preparing the greens since the announcement of the award of the Championship to Ayr at the last event in 2000. Pitchcare has been speaking with Hugh about his preparations, and we will be running a series of articles on his greens work up to and during the Championship which commences on 23rd July. |

Why use an Agronomist? - An interesting question, which I am sure has been asked by many groundsmen and greenkeepers. Noel MacKenzie of Sports Turf Consulting explains the role of the agronomist in the industry and how they can provide important support to the grounds/greens manager. Read article. Cricket Rollers - One of the age old dilemmas - when to roll and when not to roll, and what weight roller should I be using? Alex Vickers of Cranfield University with a fascinating, if somewhat mathematical, explanation of how it should be done. Read article. Irrigation Management - In the United Kingdom there is a relatively small amount of data available for research into irrigation scheduling and crop coefficients for sportsturf surfaces. Crop coefficients allow correct application rates for irrigation to be calculated. Phil Sharples of Reaseheath College presents a paper investigating the current literature available, determining the crop coefficient values for use with first class football pitches and reporting upon the potential managerial, soil and climatic scenarios affecting this. Read article. |

The Reebok Stadium - Richard Norton has been the groundsman at Bolton Wanderers for 15 years. During the summer the Reebok has been re-turfed and there has been some significant renovatiopns at the training ground. Richard explains why he decided to re-turf rather than overseed. Reaseheath Turf Machinery Show - Taking place on Wednesday 7th July. Pitchcare will bring you all the news from the show, plus views on the performances of the turf machinery being put through their paces. World Bowls - As mentioned previously, Pitchcare will be producing a series of articles over the coming month detailing the work that Head Groundsman, Hugh Mclaughlin, and his team are doing in the lead up to the Championship. Cocksmoor Wood GC - The municipal golf course, run by Birmingham Council, has a different philosophy and different problems to deal with compared to a private members' course. Dave Fellows talks about his work and experiences. |
