Offsetting Tracks

1 reply - Last reply at 16th Mar 10 22:34:00 - Just a quick question guys, have any of you ever offset your tracks by 1/2 a track year on year so for example one year you would have 13 tracks and the following only 12 with them starting half a track in? Obviously could only be done if you can spare a track but I was just thinking about heavy wear area's and spreading it year on year. Do any of you experienced guys know of a good reason not to do this?

red thread, lack of growth and psr

55 replies - Last reply at 16th Mar 10 21:25:30 - Ok bit of a variation on a theme. Went down ground today(sat) was going to cut the square but decided not to cos after all the rain yesterday, its still a bit wet. My plan was to cut today, and start PSR Mon/tues. But I am concerned still about redthread and lack of growth. Fert I put on tues is now well washed in but I am concerned that if I start psr whilst growth isnt looking great, I may do more harm and kill some of the grass off.

Soil analysis report - cricket square

47 replies - Last reply at 16th Mar 10 21:00:51 - The soil analysis report for my cricket square shows: pH : 7.74 Sand : 44 % Silt : 32 % Clay : 24 % CEC : 21.1 (meq/100g) Index mg/l P 3 31.2 K 2 168 Mg 2 58 Ca 3037 I’d be grateful for any help regarding a fertilizer programme to try and achieve correct balance/levels of elements. For the last 2 years I’ve been applying a 5-5-10 + 4% FE throughout the year as recommended to me.

Residential - Grass Seed Recommendations

9 replies - Last reply at 16th Mar 10 19:38:29 - Hi all I was wondering if there was any advice could be offered for a residential family garden We are classed as living in woods, surrounded by a few giant chestnut trees, established plants all around the garden, which was re-turfed last year. Instead of blaming anyone, it was red hot last year and snow/ice this year and the turf makes the garden look worse than it was. It's patchy and basically a quarter of it looks like pure mud! Awful! I saw a post on here re veri-green, it doesn't seem to have the best reviews so off I go to the garden centre to find some decent cultivar that is quite heavy duty and will grow well in shady and damp areas, and on dry slopes. If I'm asking too much please say! i often look at the grass in open areas, like meadow grass that seems quite compact but unsure if this would work in the garden. Can you be kind enough to recommend something to go for that I can plant out later this month? Can I mix boxes for results or is there no point? Huge thanks in adv

Champion.

0 replies - What a great spectacle today's racing at Cheltenham was. A fantastic champion hurdle, won by a horse who seemed to take a pull back two out and when asked quickly put on another gear. The sun out, a packed crowd, the course looking fantastic, as ever. It just gets better. Well done to all involved and let's hope the rest of the week is equally as good.

What hose

11 replies - Last reply at 16th Mar 10 18:40:43 - Mystery theft of the winter. I went to the container to get the hose to ballast the roller. No hose. Checked all other places on ground and all club members and contacts. Still no hose. The container's been locked all winter and nothing else looks to have gone. The hose was old and bog-standard domestic stuff. It wasn't even on a real - just hung on a couple of hooks on the container wall (clue here! one of the hooks was on the floor??) So, apart from trying to work out how 80m of hose got out of a locked container and why, I also need to work out what to replace it with. 19mm appears a better choice than 12mm as I'll get better flow. But, should I buy Tricoflex at twice the price of everything else or not?? Is Tricoflex worth it - especially with a mystery hose thief around??

Portsmouth FC

7 replies - Last reply at 15th Mar 10 21:47:28 - I see on the BBC sport web site, 'Friday Gossip' that the Portsmouth players are going to chip in to pay 8 members of staff at the training ground. Hopefully the staff at the training ground will be OK, it is typical of Football Clubs that it is possible for one player to earn more in 4 days than a hardworking groundsman does in a whole year. The CEO who was in charge for this financial fiasco has reduced his salary to a mere 50K per year to help the club out.

Choosing contractors.

102 replies - Last reply at 15th Mar 10 18:58:59 - Where ever possible it is my preference to complete all tasks "in house", unfortunately however, with the next project this is not possible. My experiences of using various contractors has resulted in mixed satisfaction over completed tasks. My question is, what do you guys look for when employing someone to come in and do a job on your grounds? I see many people who come in and talk a good game, but would they be up to the job if awarded a contract? Is it a question of paying top whack or seeking references from previous clients? Does the contractor have the ability, machinery, qualified and well trained staff, to complete the task to a satisfactory standard? How can we be sure when spending thousands of pounds that we are going to get value for money? Vic.

Ground sharing

7 replies - Last reply at 15th Mar 10 09:07:52 - Our Club has been approached to allow another Club to share our ground next season. Club members are being asked what their thoughts are and I, at the moment, tend to be in favour with reservations. Just thought I'd ask if any PC members have any experience of this and what those may be, good, bad, or indifferent. Any totally unexpected pitfalls? Did it prove beneficial? I'm talking both pitchwise and in general. All feedback, as ever, appreciated.

Which Mower would you Buy

10 replies - Last reply at 14th Mar 10 13:42:59 - Lucky me!! My committee agreed last week that I can look to purchase a new wicket mower- so I have been busy talking to manufacturers getting prices. All have been very helpful and not sold to hard yet and clearly all keen to demo once I can get on the square. As a relative newcomer to being the clubs groundsman I would really welcome views and thoughts on the following machines and if you were in my position which machine would be top of your list. Look forward to getting some real advice/guidance- oh and if I should consider another machine please tell me. My list is: Dennis- FT510 * 20" cut - with cassette blades * 10 blade cutting and honda 5.5 engine LLOYDS PALADIN * 21" cut * 11 blade cut Allett Mowers - C20 * 20" cut * Honda 5,5 engine * 10 blade cut * cassette system Thanks
