Decompaction

1 reply - Last reply at 9th Feb 12 21:42:50 - Our pitches get played on right throughout the year and in the worst of weather, particularly in UK and Ireland. During summer repair work we use vertidrain type machines to decompact the surfaces. Is this the correct approach?Normally sand is applied at the same time and brushed in. What level of decompaction are we achieving with this procedure? Has it ever been measured? Is it temporary? Would hollow coring be a better approach? Jim

8 replies - Last reply at 7th Feb 12 21:24:03 - Just looking into getting some new sockets and posts for the grass tennis courts here. I just wanted to clarify the difference between grass tennis posts and sockets, and hard court tennis nets and sockets. We have grass courts but it appears someone has installed hard court equipment a very long time ago. Thanks.

Waterlogged pitch

15 replies - Last reply at 6th Jan 12 20:11:41 - 1 corner of the main pitch is waterlogged, probably as a consequence of damage during the summer. Have dug down to the main drains to check if they are damaged. Fortunately they appear to be ok. However the top 10 cm is completely saturated but below this the soil is compact and dry. The pitch is too wet at the moment to get it vertidrained with a tractor. Does anybody have any ideas how i can get the water to drain so it will dry enough to get a tractor on. Is there a pedestrian deep spiker / vertid

removing standing water from fine turf

26 replies - Last reply at 27th Dec 11 15:32:50 - I have a green that has 4 inches of root zone over very heavy clay and also sits around 8 feet below some tennis courts. the whole green sits in a sump, i have now managed to get drain pipes to run from the ditches, so i now need to get standing water from the green to the ditches, otherwise the sward just rots. I have made a small mole plough and done some trial work with it, but the surface does tear a bit. So to the questions. Can i back fill the runs with a coarse sand ? Does anyone have any

Fine sand or rootzone

5 replies - Last reply at 18th Dec 11 12:21:29 - Pitches are getting heavily worn and obviously a dressing of sand helps with drainage but often leaves soil profiles a disadvantage of nutrient retention. Why question is wouldn't it be better to use a rootzone with a clay, slit and sand mix, with a high percentage in sand than just fine sand?. thoughts guys?
