Cricket Loam

Cricket Loam

We stock over 5000 bags of cricket loam which are compatible with the majority of cricket wickets, whether you are maintaining to a 1st class county or a school wicket standard. Our range of cricket loams are suitable for all end of season cricket wicket renovations, in season pitch repairs and new constructions.

ASSB or ‘Motty’ Test

An Adams and Stewart soil binding (ASSB) or ‘Motty’ test is important in understanding the binding capabilities of the soil you are working with, and therefore your choice of loam. It is advised that you undertake a Motty test before you start thinking about purchasing your loam. Using a product that doesn’t meet your current soil classification or target performance group, could have adverse affects on the playability of the wicket through the growing season.

A Motty test calculates the soil’s ability to bind by testing its strength. From the results of this test, an adequate choice of loam can be made to suit your own personal cricket square. Once results are obtained, a loam with similar clay content can be purchased. It is important to note that soils with ASSB/Motty values over 90kg and below 45kg are generally deemed as unfit for cricket pitches. Soils which disintegrate between 45 and 70kg are fit for club pitches, and between 70 and 90kg for first class pitches.

ASSB / Motty Value Equivalent Clay Content For Well Made Motties Strength Category
113kg (250lb) and over Over 55% Exceptionally Strong
91-113kg (200-250lb) 44-55% Very Strong
68-91kg (150-200lb) 33-44% Strong
45-68kg (100-150lb) 22-33% Moderately strong
23-45kg (50-100lb) 11-22% Weak
9-23kg 20-50lb) 4-11% Very weak
Under 9kg Below 4% Non-binding

Unfortunately the loam appeared to have too much clay content for our use on a grass tennis court.

On 17-Oct-2013 the supplier responded:
Your comments are much appreciated. The Loam you have selected is a 30% Clay content, we do have a selection of loams with clay content ranging from 24% to 41% so you have selected a middle of the range clay content loam. If you do require any further assistance on this or any future purchase, please do not hesitate in contacting our sales team directly, who are there to help. Many thanks again for the feedback to us.

3 of the bags of loam had split before and during transit i spoke to sales and without any hesitation the cost of the bags was refunded even though I only wanted to make them aware that the damage had occurred and not that I was expecting to be reimbursed.

On 16-Oct-2013 the supplier responded:
Service rating :Your feedback is very much appreciated both in the first instance of the damaged bags of which we are pleased the issue was solved quickly and to your acceptance.
In regards to the germination of the seed mentioned, hopefully you now have started to see some germination take place. As you are probably aware this is a very high quality seed from a well known industry supplier used extensively by many professional groundsman across the country using the very best cultivars. Some years can cause problems or delays in germination due to adverse weather of cooler than expected temperatures or excessive rain fall or drought. The general feedback this year is that most have experienced good germination this autumn. As the autumn progresses we would appreciate any feedback (if you could please contact me directly) on the results you have experienced. Again many thanks for feeding back this info to us and selecting Pitchcare as your supplier for these goods.

Despite being stored under cover at the delivery address, the loam was damp and came out of the bags in clumps (unlike last year) which made it difficult to spread evenly.

On 11-Oct-2013 the supplier responded:
We are very sorry to hear that you have had quality issues with your loam this year. We appreciate you have taken time to feedback to us this information. We have many Cricket Groundsman who purchase their loam from us and we take very seriously any quality issues such as this. I have reported your findings back to the supplier and asked them to explain why damp loam was sent out for delivery.
I will email you directly to follow this up. May I take this opportunity in thanking you again for bringing this to our attention and choosing Pitchcare for your end of season renovation products.
