Dunweedin Rubber Crumb (20kg bag) is a long term, cost effective solution to create a flexible reinforced turf. The introduction of Dunweedin rubber crumb allows turf to efficiently regenerate from the root structure, improving the appearance, resistance and aeration of the plant.

The Benefits of Dunweedin' Rubber Crumb:Background

The material evolved from research into all-weather surfaces for equestrian uses in the late 1980's where rubber fibre was mixed with sand and laid over a firm compacted stone base to form an arena. Horses require some form of cushioning to minimise jarring and damage to tendons, which is true for most animal and human sports activities. Well maintained natural turf is still the preferred surface for most sporting events.

The ground, however, needs to recover quickly from either hoof or human feet depressions as damage can occur to the surface due to the forward movement of either hoof or foot. Mature turf has sufficient resilience to recover almost immediately but, if over-used in wet weather, the protective top growth is destroyed. When eventually the root structure of the turf has been destroyed, or over compaction takes place, regeneration is no longer possible.

How it is used and works

On a Domestic lawn when applied as a top dressing we would normally recommend a total application of 2 kgs per square metre. This should be applied in 2 applications at 1 kilo per square metre for each application with a period of 6 weeks between the applications.

The Rubber Fibre quickly becomes entangled with the grass and will not migrate. It then bonds with the soil or other growing medium such as sand, peat, etc and with the grass roots. The bonding of the fibre with the growing medium and root structure provide an extremely strong, resilient and wear resistant base that allows the grass to regenerate. Further dressings can be applied as necessary to build up the degree of protection required.

As well as binding the root structure Dunweedin' rubber crumb improves aeration within the root zone and increases the flow of nutrients and moisture. Pressure on the surface created by traffic actively helps this process by the continuous compaction and expansion of the rubber crumb.

Dunweedin' Rubber crumb turf reinforcement can also be used with grass seed in conjunction with a growing medium such as soil or grit sand – bare patches of earth which used to have a turf cover can be cultivated and sprinkled with Dunweedin' rubber crumb and grass seed, or incorporated into the soil before re-turfing.

Initial Experimentation and Uses

In 1980 the rubber fibre was first laid on a track of exposed chalk with some grit sand and within a very short period natural regeneration of turf and local plant life took place. This turf was found to be wear resistant to horses in the field, remaining green in dry weather and providing a more resilient surface.

In the late 1980's and early 1990's the product was successfully tested by the Royal Horticultural Gardens at Wisley in Surrey and a number of National Trust properties.

Dunweedin' Rubber Crumb for Turf Reinforcement is protected by UK Patent GB 2244988
