Some soils are derived from sandstone which is characteristically low in nutrients and very free-draining. These properties make vigorous growth for many plants impossible, however certain wildflower species have particular adaptations such as the symbiotic relationships with bacteria and leaf mechanisms which reduce the loss of moisture. This allows the wildflowers to make the most of these circumstances allowing them to capitalise and grow in areas where there is little competition. Wildflower mixtures in this range are also well suited to well drained slopes and embankments.
