Council Cook up Healthy Half Term

Press Release

Calder Valley MP, Chris McCafferty, has welcomed news that there will be a new exercise class organised for people in Brighouse in conjunction with cardiac professionals from Calderdale Royal Hospital as well as a series of starter walks.

The scheme ties in with the 'Be Active….Be Healthy' programme to promote active lifestyles for all, which will lead to the improved health of individuals in Calderdale. This is being run by the Activity & Community Development Team at Calderdale Council.

There will be a series of events throughout Calderdale, suitable for all the family, staring with a family walk, Treasure Hunt, Nutrition Exhibition and Healthy Lunch at Wellholme Park on Monday 13th February.

Chris said, "I am delighted that Brighouse will become even healthier following the introduction of this new class. As patron of CREW (Cardiac Rehabilitation through Exercise and Walking) I know the importance of exercise in both preventing and recovering from serious illnesses.

It is better for patients, families and the NHS if we are able to prevent serious illnesses. I would like to see these schemes throughout the Calder Valley."

HEALTHY activities and nutritional advice will be on the menu for all the family during February half term (13 -18 February) when Calderdale Council run a series of events to promote a healthier more active lifestyle.

The week long programme at different venues across Calderdale range from family walks and self defence classes to rollerblading and nutritional advice - and it is all free!

Calderdale has one of the lowest number of active adults in Yorkshire and the Humber with only 21 per cent of adults doing at least 30 minutes exercise five times a week compared with a regional average of 24 per cent. Adults in Calderdale are also not eating enough fruit and vegetables with only 20 per cent consuming the recommended five portions.

Development Manager for Calderdale Council, David Brook said: "The Council has organised these programmes of initiatives across the district during half term week in an attempt to encourage families to live a healthier lifestyle by involving them in exercise and offering advice on healthy eating.

The week isn't about training Olympic athletes but promoting active lifestyles and a healthy diet to all ages and abilities."

Calderdale Council's, Cabinet Member for Community Services, Cllr Amanda Byrne added:
"The week is the first of its kind in Calderdale to be targeted at families in a response to the low levels of activity and healthy eating in the area.

This is an opportunity for all the family to do something together and encourage each other on the road to a healthier and happier future."

During the week those taking part will have the opportunity to feedback their thoughts on the sessions so that the Council can provide residents with future events that meet their needs.
