NAW 2019 continues with an exclusive insight from an employer’s perspective
As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2019 and a drive to encourage more young people to consider a career in our industry, we started this week with a video featuring apprentices from prestigious clubs throughout the north west (click here to view).
In this video, Lee Williams looks at things from another perspective with Matt Shimwell, Course Manager at Manchester Golf Club. We ask Matt what it takes to be a greenkeeper/groundsperson, if apprenticeships are an important part of team requirements at the club and how we can encourage young people into our industry.
Matt commented: "It takes hard work and dedication to work in our industry as well as someone who is reliable and keen on early mornings. It's such a rewarding job; especially in the summer when you can look back at all of the work carried out throughout the week or that month and get great satisfaction from it."
"Apprentices are a massive part of course life at Manchester Golf Club. We throw them in at he deep end and teach all the skills required to work their way up and gain the relevant qualifications to further their career."
For more information on apprenticeships, we have articles from both the view of an employer and an employee which can be viewed here:
