Apprentice Groundsman

Situated in 42 acres of landscaped grounds adjacent to the River Thames in Fulham, The Hurlingham Club is recognised as one of the world’s finest private member clubs.

Since its opening in 1869, The Hurlingham Club’s croquet and tennis lawns, botanical gardens and stately Georgian Clubhouse, have made it a sought-after destination for exclusive sporting and social activities.

The Department

The Grounds Team are part of the Estates Department and are made up of 26 professional and highly motivated individuals who pride themselves on the maintenance and upkeep of the prestigious grounds. The grounds of the Club include ten croquet lawns, thirty grass tennis courts, a cricket ground, a nine-hole golf course, two bowling greens and over a hectare of trees, flowers, shrubs and ornamental lawns. It is through the efforts of the Grounds team that the Club’s members are rewarded year on year with award winning sports surfaces and stunning season changing flowerbeds.

The Role & Working Arrangements

As an Apprentice Groundman your salary will be £19,266 per annum and you will work an average of approximately 39 hours per week and this will include a study day. This role includes overtime work (one in three weekends) for which an overtime payment is made.

Typical duties will include:

• Working alongside our experienced grounds team you will learn the skill to carry out all general turf and grounds maintenance duties. You will also be mentored by a Senior team member who will help train you in specific skills required for the role.
• Learning to operate lawnmowers and other horticultural machinery.
• Learning how to set up the sports surfaces to the highest standards for daily play and tournaments.

This is an exciting opportunity if you have a desire for an outdoors career and a thirst for learning new skills. You will work alongside a talented team of groundsmen and gardeners tending to The Hurlingham Club’s well-known and revered grounds. This is a 2-year fixed – term apprenticeship that is a physically demanding role, working outside in all weathers. A positive attitude and commitment to a career as a Groundman are vital to the role.
