"Over the autumn and winter, Calderdale Community Services have been busy sowing wildflower seeds in different areas within Calderdale" states Recreation Support Services Manager, Mark Dempsey.IMG_2948.jpg

The inspiration for the idea came from how to maintain potential awkward and risky grass banking areas along with exchanging ideas with Ko Rodenburg of Rotterdam City Council in the Netherlands, visiting wildflower meadows at the National Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa, Telford Council in Shropshire and the natural habitats of the Lincolnshire woods and the Ranstad Dune area of Wassenaar, Netherlands.

Parks staff, during the summer, voluntarily collected wildflower seeds from their own gardens, allotments and grass verges, and started a seed bank. The autumn seeds were brought in from the National Land Life Centre at Liverpool. These autumn seeds are plant species which are natural to this area and will grow well, look good and develop with the existing plant species.

Working with Community Groups, Old Town Parish Council, Manor Heath Park with Park Pals, Hebble Trail and other areas, seeds have been sown in the following areas:

Scotty Banking and Elland Road Banking, Elland and Brighouse

And over 20 other sites.

Keep and eye out from May onwards for a blast of colour.
