A busy summer for Speedcut Contractors

Mike Beardallin Industry News

Speedcut Contractors have been completing sportsturf projects on racecourses, golf courses and sports pitches across the UK while the weather remains relatively dry.

At Stratford-upon-Avon Racecourse, Warwickshire, they have altered the line of the racetrack which had been suffering from flooding during the winter from the nearby River Avon.

And at Plumpton Racecourse in West Sussex Speedcut have installed a new primary drainage system to the North-East Bend and on the Station Bend. The comprehensive system comprises main drains and lateral drains, installed using Speedcut's Mastenbroek laser grade trencher and pipe-layer.

Speedcut have also returned to Radley College near Oxford where they installed primary drainage on the sports plateau they created last year from former agricultural ground

Wedmore in Somerset has seen two football pitches created for the village playing fields association and the building of an extension to the car park. This included the building of styles and stock-proof fencing.

Swansea Uplands Rugby Football Club has seen the completion of two new pitches and a training area, started last autumn and halted by the weather.

The pitches have now been seeded and initial maintenance will take place when the grass has become established.

Speedcut Contractors have completed tee levelling at the 12th and 16th tees at Upminster Golf Club, Essex, while at Hampstead Golf Club, North London, they have relaid the third tee and installed Super Verde artificial turf.

Also in North London, Highgate Golf Club has had a green recontoured and returfed by Speedcut.

They have also built a new tee at the 15th at Langley Park, Bromley - designed by James Edwards Golf Design - and created new paths and reformed existing bunkers on the 14th.

Speedcut have been working with Swan Golf Design at Gerrards Cross GC constructing a new practice green - and at Chislehurst Golf Club, Kent, they have rebuilt the surrounds and approach to the 7th green, a Weller Golf Design project.

At Upminster Golf Club tees have been laser-graded and renovated with Speedcut's BLEC laser grader - and new tees have been built at Newbury and Crookham Golf Club, Berkshire, and The Dyke Golf Club, West Sussex.

Another recent fast-paced job was to rebuild a bridge at Ham Manor Golf Club, West Sussex, within 24 hours - completing the job the morning before a 'shotgun' start of a major tournament in the afternoon.

Speedcut removed the old bridge - with foundations destroyed by river erosion during the winter - on the Thursday afternoon and on the Friday morning installed the bridge deck. The bridge was officially opened by the club captain just before the tournament began.

At Foxhills Golf Club and Resort, Surrey, Speedcut have completely rebuilt the 17th green and installed further paths while carrying out drainage on a driving range.

"The winter created a lot of problems on sports surfaces and drainage has been a major concern at many venues," says Kevin Smith, Speedcut contracts manager.

"Being one of our specialist areas of expertise we have been able to solve a great many problems on every type of sports surface.

"We are taking advantage of the improved weather and are progressing well across a wide range of sportsturf venues."
