Amenity Weed Control in 2009 and Beyond

Mike Birdin Industry News

As a responsible and environmentally-aware company, Amenity Land Solutions is pleased to announce that it will be staging in March three half-day regional seminars looking at some of the future options available for complete weed control in amenity situations.

This topic is of particular and growing relevance following the passing by the European Parliament of 'The Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive', which requires significant cuts to be made in pesticide use by 2010.

Among those who will benefit from attending are Local Authority staff, contractors, landscapers and others with responsibility for managing or implementing weed control in amenity areas and other open spaces.

The dates and venues for the three seminars are:

Thursday 5th March: Twickenham Rugby Stadium (Obelensky Suite).

Tuesday 10th March: Wolverhampton Wanderers FC's Molineux Stadium (Executive Lounge)

Thursday 12th March: Manchester City FC's City of Manchester Stadium (Players Wives' Lounge)

All seminars run from 10am - 1pm and will be followed by a buffet lunch.

The speakers at all three seminars are:

Jonathan Carr, managing director of Amenity Land Solutions

Jonathan will discuss highly cost-effective weed control using ultra low volume (ULV) application equipment mounted on road sweepers to reduce chemical usage, manpower, carbon emission, time and costs. He will also look at the Mankar ULV Spraying System which uses very low volumes (typically 2 litres/ha) of Roundup ProBiactive 450 herbicide to achieve total weed control using specialist hand-held and vehicle/tractor-mounted equipment.

Paul Clifton, Bayer Environmental Science

Paul will highlight the use of Pistol to achieve total weed control on soft surfaces. Containing Glyphosate PLUS Diflufenican, the product is proving highly effective due to its translocated systemic action coupled with pre-emergence activity. One application will give effective control for up to 6 months and Pistol also has an excellent safety profile.

Dr Dominic Lamb (and/or Manda Samson), Monsanto

Will be discussing the use of Glyphosate-based Roundup ProBiactive to achieve total weed control in the amenity sector. The session will focus on efficacy, safety and the spectrum of uses for the product range.
