Big Manchester Picnic puts Barenbrug RTF turf to the test

Piccadilly GardensA 2,500sq m area of Barenbrug-bred Rhizomatous tall fescue (RTF) turf has had its toughest test yet as 15,000 people descended on Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens for an en masse picnic during the August bank holiday weekend.

Manchester City Council invested in very hard-wearing RTF turf grown by Lindum Turf and supplied by All Turf to cope with the gardens' vast footfall. More than 18 million people walk across its grass a year, with RTF's unique 'creeping' growth habit and deep-rooting capabilities down to one-and-a-half metres giving the turf the superior wear tolerance and recovery it needs to withstand this excessive wear.
