The painstaking task of getting Carlisle United's pitch ready for next season is now under way - with the help of 30 tonnes of sand.

Groundstaff started work on the Brunton Park surface yesterday ahead of the Blues' 2014/15 campaign in League Two.

The pitch is expected to be ready in time for United's home pre-season friendlies, which are expected to be in late July.

The big league kick-off is on August 9.

Award-winning groundsman David Mitchell said: "At the end of the season the first job is to get rid of a few millimetres of dead grass and organic waste.

"Then we'll put 30 tonnes of sand down, spike it, brush the sand into the holes, seed it and fertilise it. We are looking at it being ready by July 19. That should be long enough."

Mitchell added that the pitch was one year into a two-year programme and would not require a more thorough ploughing until next summer.
