Dennis quality impresses SGM Hire

The prodigious growth of SGM Hire shows just how many councils are now choosing to rent equipment rather than purchasing outright.

The Fife-based company offers machinery on hire and contract hire from depots throughout the UK. Founded in 2000, turnover in the year ending 2004 was an impressive £6m and the equipment fleet is currently valued at over £20m.

Claiming to be the fastest growing grounds care hire specialist in the UK, SGM Hire has over 200 council clients across the country. They are typical of the many local authorities seeking 'Best Value' procurement solutions.

"By hiring from us, councils know exactly what the costs are going to be over the entire contract," says Andrew Kirk, General Manager of SGM Hire. "We offer a total package that includes full backup and servicing. It's important that we offer the best equipment from companies that can support our commitment to service."

SGM Hire has recently placed more than 40 FT pedestrian cylinder mowers made by Dennis into councils including Tameside, Stockport, Rhondda and Caerphilly. These multi-tasking units give a precise finish to the turf and can be fitted with quick-change cassette attachments to undertake additional tasks, such as verti-cutting, scarifying and brushing.

"The Dennis machines are one of the best on the market - and if we want to be the best grounds care hire company, we need to supply the best quality products," says Andrew Kirk. "We and our clients admire their versatility. Being able to change quickly from a cutting cylinder to, say, a scarifier makes so much sense in terms of saving time and labour. "

"The results on bowling greens, tennis courts and other fine turf areas are second to none. The Dennis machines really are top quality."

The FT range features units with cutting widths from 17-34in (43-86cm), as well as larger versions for intensive usage, designated the 'G' Series. Each model is designed to be light in weight so as to exert minimal pressure on the turf, and they are easily manoeuvred.

Dennis are able to support SGM Hire's commitment to customer service by guaranteeing prices for equipment and parts, and by offering rapid delivery through their specialist dealer network.

"SGM Hire's policy is to buy from dealers that are local to the client," explains Andrew Kirk. "They are best placed to give demonstrations, supply the machinery, explain key concepts and fulfil warranty requirements. Working together provides a total package to ensure customer satisfaction."

It's a successful formula. SGM Hire forecasts a 2004/05 turnover figure of approximately £8m.
