The American developer confirmed on Tuesday that he had bought himself a slice of The Open with the iconic Scottish links from Dubai in a cut-price £35.7 million "cash deal" - and now the billionaire expects to add the US Open to his empire.

As revealed exclusively in The Telegraph on Monday, Trump, 65, has secured himself a place in the heart of golf's establishment by persuading Leisurecorp, a subsidiary of the Dubai government, to sell him the South Ayrshire layout, with its legends, its famous lighthouse and its stunning views over the Firth of Clyde - and, most pertinently, its guarantee to stage its fifth Open in the next eight years.
Trump sealed the purchase on Tuesday night at what many will believe is a remarkable bargain price.
