Football groundsman awards
The football Groundsman of the year awards were announced at Saltex today. The Premier Groundsman was named as Paul Burgess from Arsenal, Steve Welsh(Nottingham Forest) won the first division, Jem Fox(Reading)the second division and Macclesfield in the third division. Steve Welsh was then awarded the IOG's overall Groundsman of the year trophy. This year sees the start of the FA's newly formed Groundsmans awards for the lower leagues-an award warmly welcomed by the Industry. In the Conference,Peter White from Doncaster Rovers FC, beat off competition from Woking FC and Southport FC to win the cut glass vase and a holiday for two. In the National League System level 2 awards, Peter Allen from Moor Green FC came first in the Dr Marten's League, Alan Mitchell from Wingate and Finchley FC won the Ryman league and Jonathon Wood from Gainsborough Trinity FC topped the nominations in the Unibond League.
The overall winner in this section was Alan Mitchell-again winning a cut glass vase and a holiday for two in Europe.
In National League level 3, Alan Jeeves from the HSBC FC in Sheffield beat off four other regional finalists to win, while The States of Jersey won the Local Authority award. We will post photos and more details on the site later this week, but congratulations to all of the finalists and winners. As one of the judges I have been impressed with the standards that these clubs have achieved and keep maintained. As this is the inaugural year of this now extended competition, I hope that many more clubs and local authorities will be entering the competition next year-further raising the standards of maintenance.
