wolves-and-enville-gc-apr09-024_website.jpgOn Thursday 2nd April the first meeting of the Midland Gingerbread Group took place at Enville Golf Club Staffordshire.

The day was a real success with great enthusiasm being generated amongst the group to push forward with the traditional, more sustainable methods and practices associated with the gingerbread group.

The day involved a number of short presentations in the clubhouse by Jonathan Wood Course Manager at Enville who had organised the day and Stuart Yarwood Course manager at Lymm Golf Club who is the founder member of the original Gingerbread Group. The group was then taken on a course walk to experience the work completed and ongoing at Enville. Andy Cole joined us on the course and gave an informative presentation on the during the course walk.

Managing our golf courses in this way with the aim of encouraging the finer grasses and the longevity they produce through austere greenkeeping
practices which have stood the test of time. The gingerbread group also gives greenkeepers the support network which is so valuable in our profession, experience and a friendly voice on the end of the phone is a great confidence builder and a resource which in the current financial climate can not be under estimated.

Special thanks go to Stuart Yarwood and Brian Taylor from the original gingers, they are great ambassadors for traditional greenkeeping and greenkeeping in general. I would also like to thanks Colin Webber and Bill Mitchel for travelling all the way from Devon and Cornwall to be with us, fantastic! this was very humbling. Special thanks also to Andy Cole regional STRI agronomist who was also there on the day to give his support and knowledge which will be very valuable to the group.

We have a great wealth of experience amongst us and a great support network in our quest for improved conditions for our golf courses.
