Kubota is sponsoring Gloucester RFC after the market leading manufacturer of tractors and groundcare equipment loaned the premiership rugby club one of its high performance STV40 compact tractors to aid in its pitch maintenance programme.
The company, in partnership with its local Kubota dealer - Buckland Garden Machinery - has developed a fantastic relationship with Gloucester RFC over the years for providing quality, reliable and hard working machines that have enabled the club to keep its pitch in first class condition.
As part of the sponsorship, the rugby club has recently upgraded the tractor provided for the groundsmen to Kubota's STV40 from its STV36. While both machines provide a reliable and versatile solution, the STV40 model offers higher Horse Power - delivering even better performance when the tractor is towing various attachments.
The STV40 will be used in a variety of ways to keep the 9,000 square metre pitch in excellent condition. For the club, it is vital that the rugby pitch is maintained to the highest standards, ensuring it provides good grip for players during scrummage. In addition, the pitch needs to cushion players if they hit the ground during tackling, rucking and diving.
As well as contributing to the performance of the game, the quality of the pitch is important for the club's reputation - which will help in Gloucester Rugby Club's bid to host a World Cup game in 2015.
Head Groundsman at the club, Dave Balmer, has been impressed with the Kubota tractor. "It's an ongoing process to maintain a Premiership rugby pitch, especially when we have such exciting plans for the club and therefore need to keep the pitch in top condition.
"The Kubota STV40 has proved to be a reliable machine. It's also very light so it does not mark the grass, which is a huge benefit. Other key benefits are it is the ideal size for our pitch and as the STV40 has an inbuilt cab, we can comfortably complete our groundcare tasks in the winter without getting too cold. This has been a significant help for our groundsmen that have to work in all conditions."
The STV40 is used by the club to undertake a number of jobs including aerating and spiking the pitch, spraying fertiliser and weed killer, spreading sand and ground rolling. During the cold winter months, when the club still has games and the ground needs to be maintained for playing on, the compact tractor will be used to drag frost sheets across the pitch to protect the turf.
Gloucester Rugby Club is also being supported by a maintenance contract from Buckland Garden Machinery. Richard Phelps from the dealership ensures the machine is running in prime condition and complies with service requirements.
Speaking of the sponsorship, Richard commented: "We were more than happy to get on board with this project and provide ongoing maintenance support, as we're all big fans of Gloucester Rugby Club. We also know that they've got a huge challenge on their hands to keep the pitch in premium condition, which is why we recommended they look at a Kubota tractor to help them.
"The Kubota STV40 is perfect for the clubs needs - it's lightweight so it doesn't damage the grass, but robust and powerful so it gets the jobs done quickly and easily. It's also easy to handle - perfect for getting around the corners of the pitch."
