Lord’s all set to get a hybrid pitch on the historic square

Lord's is in the process of having a partly synthetic pitch installed on the grandstand side of the square.

The hybrid pitch could become the first artificial surface to host a county game, although it will predominately be used for practice and minor matches, starting in early May at an MCC fixture.

It could host Middlesex limited overs fixtures but cannot be used for Test or first class cricket as the surface has not been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council because of a lack of deterioration.

The pitch includes the same technology utilised at Wembley and other Premier League football grounds.

More than 90 per cent of the pitch will still be grass, but it also features loops of plastic yarn which are inserted into the ground using a laser-guided stitching machine, helping to bind the grass roots together.

Edgbaston installed a synthetic pitch on the edge of their square towards the end of 2016, while Worcestershire make use of a hybrid surface in their nets.
