Myerscough Student takes Pole Position!

A Sportsturf student at Myerscough College has recently been selected for what is arguably the number one placement for any student, at America's number one golf course. Chris Hodkinson, who is currently studying for a National Diploma in Sports Turf will join interns from all over the world to work at Pine Valley Golf Club, New Jersey, USA.

myerscouth22JAN009.jpgThe placement, which will last for one year, will see Chris and his fellow interns prepare the 6,699 yard, par 70 course for play. The placement is highly sought after as Mike O'Keeffe, Placement Officer for the Ohio State Intern Programme observed, "This is a great placement for anyone and only the lucky few are accepted through the gates".

However, now that he has landed the placement Chris will face a lot of hard work, with staff numbers at the course, south of Clementon in Philadelphia, increasing to 65 during the busy summer periods. Mike O'Keeffe commented, "The real work for Chris now begins as the workload is huge and staff average 75 hours each week and are expected to be there every day during the summer to keep the course in pristine condition, but I am sure Chris will enjoy his time there."

Students from Myerscough College have been placed at top golf courses in the past and the College is particularly proud of this achievement. Terry Robinson, Course Tutor for the National Diploma Course acknowledged, "This really is a tremendous achievement for Chris and I am sure he will benefit from this experience. Here at Myerscough we are committed to achieving the best for our students and past placements have included the Augusta National, Sea Island and Harbour Town, although I feel this is the icing on the cake."

Chris himself is obviously very excited at the prospect, enthusing, "It hasn't really sunk in yet, but I am looking forward to the experience, I can't wait to get out there and start working with the Pine Valley Team."
