Oval Head Groundsman quits

Paul Brind, Head Groundsman at the home of Surrey County Cricket Club's famous ground, is to retire at the end of the season on the grounds of ill health.

Paul Brind who succeeded his father Harry, has been in charge as Grounds Manager since 1994.

Paul continued to provide top class tracks, and even two weeks ago, his skills were there for all to see during England's amazing series levelling victory over South Africa at The Oval. Paul has been unwell for a while, and he has decided that it is in his best interests to step down and look for a career change. Paul will leave officially at the end of November.

There is no doubt that Paul has been an integral cog in the Surrey wheel of success. Surrey have won no less than eight trophies in the time that Paul has been in charge of the ground. He has also won the 1st Class Cricket Groundsman of the Year Award twice and the high quality of his international pitches have earned him rave praise from all corners of the globe.

Paul said " I'll be very sorry to be leaving The Oval, as I have many happy memories of my time here and of all the wonderful people I have worked with. However, I feel that now is the right time to take the opportunity of changing my career path and moving on to other things."

Bill Gordon has been appointed to take the vacant Ground Managers position.
