Plans for an all-weather sports pitch in Otley have gone up for comment on the Leeds City Council planning portal.

After two years of delay, Sport Chevin, local sports clubs and Prince Henry's Grammar School say they are pleased that the planning application for the proposed community 3G pitch, based at the school, is now open for comment.

In partnership with the Football Foundation and several other local groups, the project team is moving forward with the plan to build a new AstroTurf pitch at Prince Henry's. The project has the support of the RFU, Sport Chevin and several local clubs, including Otley Town Football Club, Otley Zebras Rugby, local Rugby League teams, Pool AFC, Menston Junior Football Club and Otley Athletics Club.

Hundreds of people commented on Prince Henry's Grammar School's first proposals for the facility, with opinion roughly evenly split between supporters and opponents.

The latest application has several modifications, including the rotation of the pitch to move it further from the majority of the neighbouring housing. Acoustic fencing is being extended to reduce noise, and lighting has been upgraded. There is also a package of environmental measures.

Chair of the Sport Chevin group, Richard Davies, said "In our view, not only does this scheme address all of the issues previously raised by consultees, it also offers major enhancements in amenity for adjacent properties, the wider community, as well as the school and its pupils. This scheme will be of enormous benefit to the health and well-being of so many people from our community, increasing opportunities for girls, women, veterans, senior citizens, young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with disabilities as well as helping to ensure regular sporting participation for our local clubs throughout the year. Not only is this the right scheme on the right site, it is also the right time. Therefore, I would ask local people to offer their support to this wonderful opportunity."
