The winners of the SAPCA Awards 2021 have been revealed, with five companies being chosen by a panel of judges from a short list of 10 finalists.

Now in their sixth year, the awards celebrate achievements in the sports and play facility construction industry. Each year, SAPCA members are invited to submit entries to celebrate their successes, whether a new product or service, a technical innovation, a completed project, a research project or an achievement in sustainability.

The SAPCA Awards 2021 were presented during an online presentation on 24th March.

SAPCA chief executive, Chris Trickey, said: "2020 was a tough year for all industries, but the breadth and quality of entries we received for the SAPCA Award shows how the sports and play sector has remained robust.

"While the 12 months has certainly not been 'business at usual', the awards show how companies have been able to overcome challenges and disruption and to keep innovating and providing the products, services and facilities needed for people to enjoy sport and physical activity.

"It was great to see so many excellent projects being delivered by SAPCA members this year - so much so that, this year, we have two winners in the "project" category.

"All in all, the 10 finalists exemplify the wide range of technical expertise and innovation across the industry and the very high standards of sports and play projects being delivered."

SAPCA Award 2021 - Product Category

Sports Labs: Field Marshall

Sports Labs has launched its new Field Marshall product - a compact and wireless impact attenuation device, which combines three industry-standard impact devices in one single drop device.

Weighing just 14.2kg, the Field Marshall is capable of measuring force reduction, deformation, energy restitution, impact values and GMax results from a surface, thus offering an opportunity to replace the bulkier AAA (29kg), Clegg Hammer (4.6kg) and the GMax (14.2kg) devices.

With an overall weight of under 15kg, the device also opens the option for one-man testing, reducing from two technicians currently required to manoeuvre the AAA.

Tony Patterson Sports Grounds: South Sports Campus at IT Carlow

Tony Patterson Sports Grounds was chosen to model and develop the South Sports Campus at the Institute of Technology Carlow, Ireland. The 31-acre development includes six, full-size elite level playing pitches (five natural pitches and one 3G surface), an "ultra-modern" 660-seater viewing stadium and a 250-seater viewing stand. The £5m project, which was completed on time and on budget, also includes a cricket pitch, an IAAF-class, 400m running track and a 1.5km looped walking trail.

The activity areas are illuminated using a total of 26 floodlights and 103 street light columns.

SAPCA Award 2021 - Sustainability Category

TigerTurf: Trekboards

TigerTurf's new Trekboards have been designed for infill retention and to protect the surrounding environment from infill migration relating to 3G sports surfaces.

The product has also been created as a sustainable solution. Manufactured using 100% recycled raw materials, Trekboards have a lifespan of more than 50 years and at the end of their life, can be recycled again to make new ones - or to make Permeblox.

"Utilising Trekboards on one artificial grass pitch saves 4,320kgs of CO2 emissions, meeting carbon neutral construction targets via use of 100% post use recycled raw materials," said David Hook, TigerTurf 's sales director.

Allsports Construction and Maintenance: Pitch and playground at Ayr Grammar

Allsports C&M completed a pitch and playground project at Ayr Grammar School. Located on the roof of a new library and early years centre extension, the works required extensive use of lightweight materials with excellent drainage properties and durability. Additionally, the project had to be installed manually, as plant could not access the roof.

The completed playground makes innovative use of the unusual shape and space available on the roof of the new extension, while maintaining excellent permeability and durability.

Labosport: Ball trajectory service

Labosport has created a new ball trajectory analysis service, which can assess whether ball stop mitigation is required for a sports facility - and its recommended height and location. The innovation allows sophisticated trajectory models for different sports (cricket, football, rugby, golf) and many of Labosport's clients are now using the service to support objective decision making about ball stop mitigation.

Professor David James, MD of Labosport, said: "We believe that this highly innovative and technical service is providing significant value to sports facility managers and developers.

"The experimentally validated trajectory model simulations are 'state of the art' and are grounded in peer reviewed scientific publications. The analysis provides a clear indication of what ball stop mitigation may be required, and aids the stakeholders with objective information."
