Phil, who was featured in last year's June/July issue of the Pitchcare magazine, won numerous awards during his time with Somerset. Taunton has long been regarded as the best batting pitch in England which is why, presumably, it has been the recipient of so many accolades.
Phil first joined the club as 15 year old youth player, but developed an interest in pitch maintenance. After many years experience at the club and elsewhere he returned to take over the position of Head Groundsman in 1987, and was one of the longest serving and most experienced on the County circuit.
Five times winner of the coveted Cricket Groundsman of the Year Award, Phil indicated in the article with us that there was some 'disagreements' between him and his 'superiors'. "My job is to prepare the best wicket I can within the timescale available. I am being told that wickets should be a more even contest between bat and ball. Fair enough, but to try and do that I need time on my wickets. And how can I do that when the fixture list is so crammed?"
One newspaper is reporting that Phil is suffering from an illness which is preventing him from working. We can categorically state that this is not the case.
