Stuart Canvas enter a new era
Kenyon Textiles, the leading manufacturer of sports and bespoke coverings, has been purchased by a consortium of four shareholders led by Edward Stoddart and Compton Hellyer.
Kenyon Textiles owns the brand of Stuart Canvas Products which makes the covers for the major tennis tournaments in the UK including Wimbledon, The Stella Artois Championships at Queens and the LTA grass tournaments. It also owns the patent for the Cricket Hover Cover currently being used at Lords and Old Trafford and builds mobile cricket covers for many County Cricket Clubs as well as for the West Indies Cricket Board. In addition, Kenyon Textiles provides frost covers for major sporting venues including horse racing which is currently debating the best form of frost covers for racecourses.
Edward Stoddart, the new chief executive, says "This is a fantastic opportunity to develop an already established and successful business by investing further in research and by capitalizing on an already well known brand name in the sporting arena, Stuart Canvas Products."
Donald Kenyon, the founder of Kenyon Textiles, will continue as a non-executive director of the company and will be working closely with Edward Stoddart and the new non-executive chairman, Compton Hellyer (formerly founder and chairman of Sporting Index).
Compton Hellyer says of the purchase "We are thrilled to have the chance to grow such a prestigious client list. With Donald Kenyon's experience, Edward Stoddart's marketing skills and the support of all the existing employees, we have a great team."
Alan Mills, who recently retired as Wimbledon Championships Referee, has been a consultant to Stuart Canvas Products for the last 15 years. Alan plans to expand the business to overseas events, as he now has more time available.
As one of the few bespoke commercial covering manufacturers left in the UK, the business will concentrate on the sports and transport sectors.
