The Royal Opening

By Anne Wilson

HRH The Duke of York officially opened the redeveloped golf holes at Headingley Golf Club, Leeds on the 4th March. As the Designer and Project Manager, STRI's Golf Course Architect Jonathan Tucker was presented along with the Principal Contractor, Greenstaff and Chairman of Green - reflecting the team effort involved.

His Royal Highness showed tremendous interest in the project as well as a breadth of knowledge in the finer points of golf course architecture befitting his role as the Captain of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club.

The event attracted significant interest and is just reward for the Golf Club's forward thinking approach to meet the modern demands of the game. The course now extends to over 6,700 yards with the formation of the par 5 holes on this Alister Mackenzie course. The new land has been well utilised and the redeveloped holes which have taken 18 months to mature will certainly add a further dimension to play!
