The Turfgrass Industry, 75 Years and Still Growing
Over 200 representatives from across the Turfgrass Industry met up at Bingley on 12th October, to celebrate 75 years of progress, on STRI's official anniversary. They were treated to an 'Open Day' exploring the grass roots of their industry, alongside a display of the latest technologies available in sports surface science, for the design, construction and management of today's golf courses and sports pitches.
The 'Open Day' was followed by a dinner in the historic splendour of East Riddlesden Hall. The celebrations were opened by Dr David March, STRI's Chairman, followed by a speech from the President, Lord Griffiths M.C., Guest of Honour was Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A.
Local dignitaries included the Lord Mayor of Bradford and the Councillor, Margaret Eaton.
To mark the occasion STRI has published a "Commemorative Bulletin - A Review of the Turfgrass Industry Past, Present and Future". This hundred page book contains articles from 24 specialists covering all sectors of the Turfgrass Industry worldwide. Copies have been sent to all STRI's Subscribers in place of their usual October Turfgrass Bulletin. This has left a limited number of copies, which we have been able to make available for sale
The guest list included many notable figures reflecting STRI's standing in the Turfgrass Industry. A full compliment of STRI staff, including some retired members, and two former Chiefs, Dr Mike Canaway and Dr Peter Hayes were also present.
Chief Executive Gordon McKillop said "The whole day from start to finish was a great success, despite the weather turning bad on us later on during the afternoon. A large number of clients visited us on the day and most were surprised at the range of services we provide. We were also very pleased with the good coverage we got in the local press and on television. The Lord Mayor of Bradford and also the Leader of Bradford Council visited us on the day and this has helped to strengthen our links with the local community. Finally, the dinner in the evening was a great success and the proverbial good time was had by all, staff and clients alike. Those who organise the celebrations for our centenary now have a hard act to follow!"
