Mottram Hall Golf Club now has precise control of the water on its course, thanks to the TrunkPump from Campey Turfcare. Flooding can be cleared or irrigation water moved at the flick of a tractor pto switch.
Estate and Golf Course Manager Stuart Stenhouse explains: "I had a water pump before but it was just 3cm capacity and was flimsy and comparatively useless! We needed something that was portable and versatile and could move large or small quantities of water. The TrunkPump came up in a casual conversation with Campey Turfcare's Simon Gumbrill, and after seeing a demonstration, I ordered one straight away."
"I buy tractors and machines from Campey Turfcare and trust their product knowledge - I did not have to look elsewhere to see what was on the market because I knew I'd be buying the best!"
"All I have to do is uncoil the discharge hose, engage the PTO and the pump is running all in less than 30 seconsds!"
Stuart uses the TrunkPump to pump water out of a large irrigation lake, clear bunkers and in any other areas where water needs to be moved. "It is highly versatile," he comments, "and because it is so compact, we can back it into almost anywhere."
In winter, the TrunkPump will be in use almost constantly, Stuart estimates. "It is important to keep the course at its best and to make sure the customers can play in all conditions where possible," he says.
However, even with such intensive use, its low running cost is part of the attraction. "As the TrunkPump runs from the tractor's pto, it has lots of power and can make use of the economical diesel fuel of a tractor, much more economical than using a petrol powered pump," Stuart explains.
At full revs, the TrunkPump moves 280 gallons of water per minute, but Stuart says: "I sometimes use it with a third of the revs and it still moves a vast amount of water, but with even greater economy."
And like all good members of a greenkeeping team, the TrunkPump can work on its own. "I love the fact that we can go and set it up, turn it on and leave it to work!" Stuart says. "You don't have to come back and constantly fill up with petrol as it lasts so much longer with the tractor's diesel engine.
