Urgent Weather Report

Issued 10.45 a.m. on Tuesday 20th January 2004

The UK is set for a severe wintry plunge after the coming weekend, with sub-zero temperatures and widespread snow forecast.

Cold polar air will dominate from Monday of next week (26th) - affecting Scotland and the east at first and the rest of the UK soon after.

Accumulations of snow - especially in the north and east are expected to be significant, producing widespread dislocation of the transport system and a serious impact upon outside sporting events.
