Watt Fences- Roll on/Roll off fences

Bill Wattin Equestrian

Ludlow Racecourse has been very busy over the summer getting prepared for their new season which started on the 7th October.

Ludlow Race Course
Ludlow Racecourse is situated 2 miles north of the market town Ludlow in Shropshire and has records of racing as far back as 1725. The racecourse was originally a venue for flat racing but it is now a national hunt course with jumping starting in the mid-nineteenth century. The course consists of a right handed oval approximately a mile and a half around with a run in of just over a furlong and it still retains its strong Edwardian character and strong club atmosphere. In the early part of the summer Ludlow put an order in with us to provide them with 4 new roll on/roll off chase fences (3 plain and 1 ditch) which were delivered to them at the end of August. Roll on/Roll off fences has increased in popularity over recent years because of their flexibility in speed of removal from the course. They also make it easier for ground to be maintained as it gives the course much more flexibility in positioning the fence. The fences are made with galvanised steel frames which increases durability and life expectancy and therefore enables racecourses to save money in the long term. As well as at Ludlow our roll on roll off fences can now be seen in use at a number of courses including Haydock, Ayr, Musselburgh, Market Rasen, Ascot and Leicester.

'We have had wooden framed portable fences from Bob Lee's pattern for 15 years and these needed to be replaced. After looking at various designs we decided on 36ft wide fences from Watt Fences. These have replaced the 54ft fences that were previously used in the straight and which were dolled off to 36ft to provide a change in the racing line. These new fences will give increased flexibility and by reducing the fence width by a third will save 30% of our birch cost each year. We have already made a repeat order for the back straight next year.' Bob Davies - Chief Executive Ludlow Racecourse

We wish Ludlow a successful season ahead.
