Well drained and aerated golf greens in hours not days

Harewood Downs (2)Leading turf maintenance specialist Bury Turfcare has dramatically reduced the time and manpower involved in maintaining golf greens in peak playing condition. The company has invested in the state-of-the-art GKB Sandfiller, which uses simultaneous, one-pass verticutting and sand filling to deliver fast and cost effective drainage and aeration.

Tractor mounted, the Sandfiller needs just two additional operators, rather than the five needed for traditional walk-behind scarifiers. All greens on a course can be reconditioned in just hours rather than days, with minimal loss of playing time and less strain on the club's staff resources. Greens can be back in play within a few minutes of completion.

Bury Turfcare is just one of three UK turf maintenance companies to have invested in the GKB Sandfiller, which combines the advantages of a field top maker and combinator into one simple but powerful machine. The scarifier and sand slitter removes and collects spoil and fills grooves with sand in one pass, creating excellent conditions for root growth and reducing the risk of moss or other contamination. The result is a well drained and aerated playing surface with a longer life span.

"We realised that many golf club managers were concerned that maintenance of golf greens was so time consuming and labour intensive," commented P

CS Oxford GC SANDFILLER
eter Knight, Bury Turfcare's Managing Director. "We were looking for a way to offer customers a better solution that was not only fast and efficient, but also freed up their staff to concentrate on other tasks, rather than tying them up for days with greens maintenance. The GKB Sandfiller was the answer, delivering excellent results."

Peter and his customers have been amazed at just how efficient the Sandfiller is compared to previous scarifying and sand slitting machines. "With some machines, to do 18 or 19 greens would involve five days of hard graft for five operatives plus the tractor driver," said Peter. "With the Sandfiller we've done the job to a very high standard with just two members of the club's staff in less than a third of the time. In fact, with extended hours we can get the whole course done in a day!"

In one pass the GKB Sandfiller combines four jobs: scarifying, collecting, top dressing and seeding. The simple but innovative design includes a slitting rotor for aeration and verticutting (scarifying), which sits neatly between the conveyor rollers. 3mm blades at 40mm row spacings provide an average working depth of 15mm. Waste material is collected in a sideways-tipping container and the flow of sand is controlled hydraulically.
