Steve Finch from Wells Town FC is Norfolk County FA's Groundsman of the Year. A volunteer with the club for 25 years, he combines his groundman's role with that of chairman.

He held off stiff competition from nominated groundsmen from around the county to claim the award for the first time. "I am very pleased to win the Norfolk section of groundsman of the year, especially as there was some tough opposition. It's very pleasing to win after previously finishing in second place twice and third on a further three occasions," said Steve.

"I spend most of my spare time on the pitch. Pitch maintenance is carried out prior to every home match and after each match to ensure it's in prime condition ready for the next fixture. My duties are varied and include verti-draining, brushing, spiking, spraying and marking out."

As the representative for Norfolk, the pitch at Wells will now be visited by an independent national judge as it goes up against other clubs from across the country.

"I'm excited and looking forward to representing the county of Norfolk in the national round. The standard of our pitch is commented on by our senior teams and every visiting club who play at Wells. Its condition allows good passing football on a level surface, something I hope will enhance our chances."

Norfolk County FA also to congratulated David Hannant of Halvergate United FC and Ray Youngman of Hempnall FC, who came second and third respectively.

Gavin Lemmon, County Development Manager and member of the judging panel, has praised the effort of all those nominated for the award. "The FA Groundsman of the Year award is an opportunity for clubs to recognize the hard work put in week after week by club volunteers. We wish Steve all the best as he flies the flag for both club and county in the national stages of the competition."
