Myerscough College and Work-Based Training

Myerscough College is the leading land based college in the country, providing high quality education and training. Presently we are expanding nationally. Giving you the opportunity to take advantage of our highly qualified team. We offer work based NVQ's: Levels 2 to 4 in Sports Turf, designed to meet the needs of trainees with varying levels of knowledge, ability, experience and qualifications. The programme is delivered in the most efficient and convenient way to suit the needs of the trainees and the employers.

Currently there are over 1000 Sportsturf trainees enrolled with the College (and thousands over the last 7 years) experiencing first class one-to-one tuition and learning materials in the workplace, while on the job and participative learning and demonstration activities delivered off the job by experienced and dedicated sports turf tutors - nationwide.

All of the trainees have access to regular and flexible tutor visits to the workplace (every 4-6 weeks). All training and assessments are carried out in the workplace using quality learning materials (Workbooks) and Myerscough On-Line Learning Network (Mollnet).

Individual training plans are developed to meet the individuals training needs. Any off the job training is arranged at one of the College sites or a local venue allowing Myerscough to deliver training nationwide. You can enrol on a Myerscough work based training programme at any time of the year. 16 to 24 year olds may be eligible for government funding onto an "Apprenticeship". The college participates in numerous government initiatives and actively promotes funded learning opportunities, however, the employers we work with acknowledge the benefits of investing in training and development for their staff.


Sportsturf Work-Based Qualifications Available.

NVQ Sportsturf Level 2* -Apprentice Scheme.

Ages 16 - 24 Free Training. Craft level qualification aimed either at those entering the profession or for candidates wishing to add to their existing experience. This qualification covers the basic principles of Sports Turf concentrating on practical tasks linked to theory knowledge. It consists of seven portfolio units involving a multitude of evidence gathering from observations, written tests, identifications to projects. To complete the full Apprenticeship the candidate must achieve a framework consisting of the NVQ2, key skills and additional courses. Key skills are achieved via portfolio evidence and formal tests, all of which can be done on-site. Additional courses would include a 1 day first aid course and spraying qualifications such as PA1, 6 & 2. Time span approx 20months

NVQ Sportsturf Level 3* - Advance Apprentice Scheme.

Ages 18 - 24 Free Training. Supervisory qualification aimed at those persons who have attained NVQ level 2 and have related experience. This qualification includes several common management units and therefore requires the student to be in a suitable position to gather the required evidence. NVQ 3 consists of 9 units covering such subjects like; Health & Safety, Estimating Resources, Pesticide Application, Time Management, Drainage & Irrigation and Create Grass Swards amongst others. The emphasis of this qualification will be to provide a substantial amount of project evidence all of which must be verified by the on-site assessor. A sound knowledge of computer skills would be beneficial. Assessment strategy - written tests, project work, observations and accreditation of prior learning. To complete the full AA the candidate must achieve a framework consisting of the NVQ3, key skills and additional courses. Key skills are achieved via portfolio evidence and formal tests, all of which can be done on-site. Additional courses would include a 4 day first aid course and spraying qualifications such as PA1, 6 & 2. In addition to the above candidates would also have to achieve a Technical Certificate, part of which would be external marked. Time span approx 24months

NVQ Amenity Management Level 4* - A higher qualification specifically aimed at persons in a management position.

*This is not a continuation from level 3. The ideal candidate for this qualification would be Course Manager / Head Greenkeeper. The NVQ4 consists of 10 units covering all aspects of amenity management such as; Finance, Developing & Monitoring Sites, Physical Resources, Staff Training, Discipline, Continual professional development, Time Management & Facilitating Meetings amongst others. Portfolio of evidence would include; Project work, Written Unit Tests, APL Work. To complement the NVQ4 the candidate would be expected to achieve other management training as well as attending various industrial related workshops and seminars. Continual Professional Development will play a fundamental part of this qualification. Time span approx 24months.
