Nemaslug Slug Killer

Nemaslug Slug Killer

Nemaslug slug nematodes controls all common species of small to medium sized slugs of up to 8 cm.

Nemaslug contains the naturally occurring, native parasitic nematode (microscopic worms) Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita. Infective juvenile slug nematodes live in soils before entering the host slug, bacteria within the nematode then causes the slugs to expire.

Nemaslug Natural Slug Killer

One application of Nemaslug provides 300,000 nematodes for every square metre of soil, giving at least six weeks control of slugs. This is generally enough time for seedlings and bedding plants to get well established.

Application Information

Nemaslug is easy to apply and does not leave any unsightly residues.

Use slug nematodes to start your control regime early in the year and you will be able to target young slugs growing under the ground feeding on humus.

Best applied when soil temperatures are above 5 ºC - typically between March and October

The majority of the slugs will die underground, so dead slugs may not be seen on the surface.

Unlike some controls, Nemaslug continues to work well during wet weather - exactly when you need protection against slugs!

How to Apply Nemaslug Natural Slug Killer

  • Avoid applying slug nematodes in bright sunlight as the nematodes are sensitive to UV light, instead apply early in the morning, in the evening or on a cloudy day.
  • Apply Nemaslug to moist soil.
  • Once mixed with water, apply immediately, making sure they are applied to the soil. Wash any nematodes off the leaves using more water.

Chemical metaldehyde based slug pellets are reported not to be effective below 7 ºC however, slug nematodes are still effective in soil temperatures down to 5 ºC. Slug nematodes are capable of surviving light frosts so control can still be achieved if the soil temperature falls below 5 ºC.

Potatoes are susceptible to slug attack later in the season than most other plants. As a result application of slug nematodes can be delayed until 6 - 7 weeks before harvest, when the tubers are most likely to be eaten by slugs.

There are two methods of drench application for Nemaslug:

  • Localised spot treatment with watering can - suited to small patches of ground or individual plant pots and containers.
  • Broad application to a large area through bowl feeder hosepipe attachment - suited to planted borders and growing areas of all kinds.

Localised Spot Treatment With Watering Can

  • Fill a clean bucket with clean water.
  • Take the nematodes out of the fridge and open the containers.
  • Tip the entire contents (minus the container) into the bucket and stir gently.
  • Rinse the container out in the bucket to ensure you have mixed in all the nematodes.
  • Pour a proportion of the concentrated mix into a watering can and top up with fresh water.
  • Water on soil/lawn and then water in with hose/watering can.
  • Each pack treats 100 m2.

Broad Application To Large Area

  • Wash the feeder through with water to ensure it is clean.
  • Add entire contents of the pack to the bowl of the feeder. Then fill the bowl with water and stir to mix thoroughly. Attach the hose.
  • Taking care to keep the feeder in an upright position apply evenly to the whole of the area for 8 minutes using a side-to-side motion to keep the nematodes well mixed. During this time most of the nematodes will have been applied.
  • Treat the same area again for a further 8 minutes (or 16 minutes for lawn applications) to apply the remaining nematodes as well as to make sure they are adequately watered in. Applications to lawns require more water to ensure the nematodes are washed through the grass thatch.
  • Adhering strictly to the application timings will ensure that any remaining colour in the bowl will be due to inert carrier only and that you have performed an even application.
  • This method provides a simple and effective application, however, it is important to follow the instructions exactly to obtain even coverage.

Additional Information

This product is a biological control which is fully compatible with an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programme.

This product is harmless to people, animals and the environment. Biological controls are living organisms, as a result the exact timing of availability and application may differ according to local environmental conditions. This may cause a slight variance in the life cycle of the target pest species from year to year. Users are advised to closely monitor their local site for signs of pest appearance, susceptible life stages and crop damage. Due to the fact that biological controls contain living organisms they have a short expiry date and should be refrigerated prior to use.
