Vermiculite 10 L

Vermiculite 10 L

Owing to its sizeable surface area, vermiculite is able to hold many times its own weight in water. This results in it being highly useful as a water retaining substrate when establishing and growing plants. Used across a range of horticultural practices, vermiculite's structure affords increased water retention, aeration and availability of plant nutrients.

Vermiculite 10 L

Vermiculite is the name given to a range of heat exfoliated laminar minerals, with a typical pH of 7.0. Vermiculite appears as accordion like, sterile shapes resistant to deterioration.

Vermiculite may be used on its own; however, it is particularly beneficial when used in conjunction with Perlite, a free-draining medium that helps to prevent waterlogging. A 50:50 mixture of both Vermiculite and Perlite produces an excellent growing substrate, whether used standalone or mixed in as part of a soil-based medium.

Uses of Vermiculite

Soil Amendment - Vermiculite can be added to soil for conditioning and lightening, either alone or in conjunction with peat or compost. This helps to accelerate growth and promote anchorage for young root systems.

Seed Germination - Use vermiculite alone or mixed with soil or peat to help seeds germinate more rapidly. If 100% vermiculite is used, feed seedlings a weak fertiliser solution once the first leaves appear. Through the use of vermiculite, damping off is prevented. This is due to vermiculite's sterile properties and allows for seedlings to easily be removed without root damage.

Root Cuttings - Vermiculite can be used directly for root cuttings to help promote healthy young root systems. Just water thoroughly and insert the cutting up to the node.

Hydroponics - 50% Vermiculite 50% Perlite. Combining the opposing characteristics of water retention and water draining associated with these two substances facilitates a balanced hydroponic growing environment.
