Recommendations for Control of Ragwort in Grassland

Clearance has been approved for repeat applications of headland polo herbicide. The clearance allows headland polo to be applied twice in a 12 month period.

Trials Work Demonstrates the Benefits

During the late 1970's trials showed that effective ragwort control can be obtained by using either a spring or autumn application of phenoxy hormones. During the last four years there has been a further twenty development trials to back these results and create an even more effective ragwort control in the form of headland polo.

As ragwort is biennial (germination and growth occurring during early spring and autumn) the highest levels of control were achieved with a programmed approach, using an application of headland polo twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn.

Application & Guidance

Application Timing

It is highly recommended that the first application of headland polo is applied in April/May and the second application of headland polo applied when the ragwort is in good growing conditions, September/October.

The applications of headland polo can be reversed, so that the first application of headland polo is in autumn and the second in spring. An autumn/spring application of headland polo will yield just as good results as a spring/autumn application.
