Chris Wood supports Bill Gordon

Chris Wood, the ECB pitches consultant, has given official support for Bill Gordon, the Surrey groundsman, after criticism of the Brit Oval surface for the Test. One article in an Australian newspaper reported that Gordon had claimed to be somebody else to avoid being interviewed about his pitch. That piece has caused huge chuckles within the profession because Gordon is one of the most taciturn of the county groundsmen.

Wood said: "At every stage of the preparation process, Bill was in communication with me." In other words, if the pitch was prepared with a result in mind, then England were privy to it.
