Essex joined Hampshire in the quarter-finals of the Friends Life t20 after their South Group match was abandoned without a ball bowled at the Ageas Bowl.

Pools of water on the outfield after overnight rain and more showers this morning ensured mopping-up operations by groundsman Nigel Gray ultimately proved fruitless.

The umpires made three inspections before calling off the match soon after 5pm, just when it looked as if a five-overs-a side match might still be played.

Hampshire were already assured of a spot in the last eight where they are away to Nottinghamshire, while Essex sneak through for a trip to Somerset as one of the best third-placed teams.

It was the second successive Hampshire home match ruined by the weather after Friday's clash with group winners Sussex went the same way.
