Grassmaster pitch considered for York City and York City Knights new stadium

The pitch that revitalised Wembley Stadium is being considered for the new home of York City and York City Knights.

As detailed specifications for the city's community stadium continue to be developed, City of York Council chiefs have confirmed that one of the options is the Desso GrassMaster field.

The surface, which weaves artificial fibres with natural grass, is designed to be hard wearing and could meet the needs of the 6,000-seater stadium at Monks Cross which, if approved by planners, will need to play host to both football and rugby league matches.

GrassMaster has transformed the pitch at Wembley, which had been heavily criticised after it repeatedly cut up during use. The system is also in place at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, Spurs' White Hart Lane, and is used by a number of American Football teams, including the Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos.

Four matches in the rugby union World Cup, at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium, were played on the hybrid grass pitch, including England's wins over Argentina, Georgia and Romania.

While council chiefs have moved to stress the GrassMaster surface was merely an option being considered, and that invitations to provide the pitch would be put out to a full tender, the Desso turf is considered a market leader in the business.
