Contractors are renovating the Stadium of Light pitch to have it ready in time for the kick-off of the 2009-10 campaign.

Sheffield-based Premier Pitches moved in on Friday to strip back the old surface and prepare to seed a new pitch.

The work had to wait until after the successful concerts by Take That and Oasis, but head groundsman Adrian Partridge says the new surface will be ready well before the August 15 start of the new season.

He said: "The pitch wasn't in bad condition when the concert covering was lifted.

"I was quite surprised, but we'd decided to seed a new pitch this summer anyway and the fact we had the concerts here didn't affect that at all.

"The contractors have brought in machinery that is stripping the top inch of material off the pitch and then they'll seed and feed it.

"After that, we're relying on the weather, but it should all be back to normal within six weeks - in plenty of time for the new season."
