MSc fills the gaps in Sports turf knowledge

Course: MSc Sports Surface Technology, Cranfield University
Student: Stephen Prinn
Current role: Deputy Section leader for Horticulture, Sportsturf and Arboriculture at Askham Bryan College

The sports pitch has gained increasing importance over recent years as the benefits of sporting activity have become more widely recognised.

Stephen Prinn began his career in the sports industry as a greenkeeper 25 years ago. He moved onto construction and design, before beginning as a teacher of Sportsturf at Askham Bryan College in York 10 years ago, where he is now deputy section leader for Horticulture, Sportsturf and Arboriculture.

Stephen has recently completed the renowned Cranfield Masters in Sports Surface Technology, which has become widely recognised as the leading qualification in the sports surface industry. The course is well respected among industry employers as the need for managers of sports facilities with a range of technical, engineering, and managerial skills increases, and the growing importance of the pitch opens up new opportunities in the areas of sports technology and science.

"[The course is] exciting, challenging and daunting all at the same time. The way the practical aspects of the course underpins the technical is great and it allows you to see and test the theory. One of the real strengths of the course is the tutors, and the other students, all these guys are at the top of their game, who wouldn't want to learn from them!"

Cranfield is about providing you with a knowledge framework - something that is tangible, that can stand up to scrutiny. It's all about providing solutions to problems at a price a client can afford. That quite often requires novel thinking. It's all about developing new techniques and investigative research to provide a better understanding of the processes that are going on.
