Mystery donor in £30k boost to club

After 50 years of struggling with the Culverden pitch there is finally a solution in sight for Tunbridge Wells FC that will take the surface from being one of the worst in the Kent League to the best.

The Culverden surface has earned a terrible reputation over the years, much to the frustration of the club. The groundsmen have made efforts to keep the pitch playable but often to no avail and to the disappointment of players and fans alike.

But now an anonymous £30,000 donation will allow the renovation of the playing surface.

"We're delighted about it," boss Martin Larkin said. "The club has worked really hard to get some investment on it. Our record is there for everyone to see.

"Away from home we're the best in the league bar none, but our home form is hit and miss. Everyone knows on a decent pitch we will score a lot of goals, and even if we can improve it by 50 per cent it will have a massive impact on results and keep the squad together."

While there is still an outside chance of replacing the grass with an artificial pitch, the minimum will be a perfect grass pitch.

Tunbridge Wells have been in talks with FA regarding the best way of using the donation to maximise the pitch improvements and they have offered to supply a professional groundsman from an English Premier League side to offer advice and help.
