Pitchcare & Syngenta Fantasy Football 20/21 - Winners Announced

Editorin Football

With the concluding round of the 2020/21 season spectated by a spattering of fans, you will forgive us for extending the celebration beyond the Ethiad. To see fans in packed stadiums, experience match day atmosphere and hear true representations from a crowd was something we all hope signifies the end of 15 testing months, where impacted by pandemic, football has provided entertainment, hope and normality to many.

We would like to go on record to thank the Pitchcare 2020/21 Fantasy Football sponsors Syngenta for their support and the 100+ entrants that competed for their share of £1500. Daniel Lightfoot, Syngenta Business Manager and sponsors of the Pitchcare Fantasy Football League, highlighted this season's pitches have performed amazingly under the intense TV spotlight of every game live, even under the most challenging management regimes. "Whilst the game's over and the players get to take time off, it never stops for the grounds' teams, as renovation kicks off to be ready for next season.

Congratulations to long time challenger Goldwyn Bird, Greenkeeper at Royal West Norfolk, who scooped the top prize of £500 after coming close in recent seasons. Tiverton Golf Course Head Greenkeeper George Stephens finished 20 points behind in second position. Stuart Entwistle of Devon Garden Solutions took third spot. Pitchcare was proud to see representation in the top 10 with the accounts team's Joe Fletcher finishing 7th. Elsewhere Edgbaston's Head Groundsman Gary Barwell finished a respectable 19th, enjoy a pie and a pint at the King Power on us.

Season Summary

Underpinning any successful side is a solid defensive unit, the masterful acquisition and seamless integration of Ruben Dias into a free flowing and talented Manchester City outfit, and it was perhaps that genius stroke that affirms Pep Guardiola into the very elite realms of successful managers to manage in England. Fantasy managers picking City attacking players still, probably like the opposition, second guessing Pep's starting 11 on a week to week basis.

Jurgen Klopp was left ruing a season wrecking injury to Virgil Van Dijk and, without their defensive rock from last season, Liverpool reverted to the team that impresses mostly, but flops occasionally - conceding more goals over the course of the season than Arsenal. Salah and Mane were again reliable point scorers and popular FF manager's picks.

A quiet resurgence is happening at Old Trafford and, despite the Glazers popularity rivalling fan enthusiasm for the European Super League (no, we weren't planning to do a league), Bruno Fernandes stood out as the highest scoring fantasy player over the course of the season with 242 points as United finished closest to their famously coined 'noisy neighbours', signalling clear progress under Ole.

Top Scoring Players 20/21 Season

The big money signings at Chelsea underwhelmed with early season popular pick Timo Werner a popular transfer out by many FF managers. At Spurs, the manager merry go round continued, only post Mourninho did we get a glimpse of Gareth Bale's high scoring potential. Leicester under Brendan Rogers look a formidable top 6 outfit and buoyed by the investment into a state of the art training ground and a memorable FA Cup win, will surely again challenge the big guns for a Champions League spot.

Clear progress at West Ham and Leeds, who are both deploying an attractive and entertaining brand of football. At Arsenal, Pepe is finally showing some of the faith placed in him for a substantial £72m outlay by Arsenal.

Emotional scenes at Crystal Palace, as the old servant of football Roy Hodgson bowed out of top flight management at 73 years old, and at Molineux where flocked to say 'obrigado' to the popular Portugese Manager Nuno, surely instigating a summer of instability at both clubs. No real surprises with the relegated outfits or who is replacing them, with just Brentford vying for top flight status for the first time.

The Harry Kane transfer situation at Spurs will be the one many fans are keeping an eye on, but here is to next season, a season for the fans, packed stadiums, atmosphere and songs a plenty. In the meantime, enjoy the Euros and hopefully a cold pint, on a packed summer's day in a crowded bar.
