Poweroll, best known for their range of British built cricket wicket rollers, have launched the first of two new smoothing irons.

The first to become available is designed for bowling greens and called the Blade Runner. This new iron has all the features that anyone could wish for to provide a professional finish to a bowling green. The primary difference between this iron and other similar ride-on machines is that where most have been designed to be utilised on golf fairways, this iron has been designed specifically for bowling greens. Priced at just £4,750 + VAT makes this new UK built greens iron very competitively priced when compared to other similar machines.

In common with most other ride-on greens irons, this machine is operated sideways with a handlebar for steering and foot control for ground speed and direction of travel. However, where it differs from most others, is that it has a wide chassis and low centre of gravity, making it very stable for the operator.

The Blade Runner has a rolling width of 1 metre and top speed of 10mph. More than fast enough for a relatively small area like a bowls green!

Ground compaction is a most desirable feature for their range of cricket rollers. However, the Blade Runner tips the scales at just 230kg; heavy enough to smooth the green but not heavy enough to compact it.

Other features include a fully enclosed Honda GX160 petrol engine for protection within a pad-lockable lid for added security. To protect the green, the engine is contained within a drip tray along with the hydrostat transmission system. The transmission has no external oil pipes and, as such, removes the possibility of oil seepage onto the green. Final drive is transmitted by belt rather than the more commonly used chain, again ensuring oil does not contact the grass.

Many bowls players and greenkeepers may not appreciate the virtues of having a greens iron available to them on their club's green for regular use unless they try one. Poweroll are currently offering a scheme for clubs to hire a new Blade Runner before committing themselves to purchase it outright and, when its qualities are fully appreciated, pay only the balance.
