Premier League fight Groundsmen's Corner

The Premier League are taking steps to protect pitches from over zealous and unsupervised warm ups and warm downs. Apparently, a number of clubs were not happy with the current ad hoc arrangements, so they have set up a committee to discuss the issue following which their findings will be circulated to clubs for finalisation.

The procedure would be incorporated in the rules of the Premier League.

All being well, they are looking to introduce the procedures in the second half of this season.

The suggested procedures are as follows:-

  1. Players are not to be allowed on to the playing surface to warm up until 45 minutes prior to kick off.

  2. Warm ups are to be restricted to a maximum of 30 minutes.

  3. No activity within the penalty area whatsoever will be allowed.

  1. Goalkeeping warm ups must take palce in the portable goals provided.

  2. Each team will have an area from edge of penalty area to touchline the length of one half to warm up in.

  3. Speed/stamina work must be carried out off the pitch along the touchline on the opposite end to the assistant referees run.

  4. Half time warm ups must be restricted to substitutes only and the above 6 points apply.

  5. Warm downs after the match must be no longer than 15 minutes.

We have also made contact with the Football League to see if they are planning to bring in any similar procedures.
