St Ives Golf Club Greenkeeper called out of bunker to win junior trophy

A last minute substitution by organiser Andy Green helped St Ives juniors win a coveted county golf trophy on Friday.

Seventeen-year-old trainee green-keeper and junior member Callum Long was doing remedial work in the bunker on the 10th hole when he was called from the course to fill in for a junior member who had dropped out of the St Ives Junior Cup final against Gog Magog from Cambridge.

Long didn't even have time to change out of his work clothes to join team mate Michael Cato on the tee.

Joe Hughes and Harriet Haywood won their match 4&3 - but Sam Rebane and Alex Jones lost theirs 2&1. So it was up to Long and Cato, who were all square in their game on the 18th, to clinch the match in a sudden death play-off. Long, who plays off 12, drove a long and straight ball on the 19th and the pair held their nerve to win the hole. On the same day the ladies scratch team beat Menzies 4-2 to win County Division Two and secure promotion to Division One.

The winning team were Paula Ewing, Kathy Cooper and Geraldine Fleming - but they had been helped to victory in their previous matches by 19-time County Champion Julie Walter and 2011 County Champion Amy Rae.
